Ask ten workshops in Al Quoz how long a ceramic coating lasts and you will get ten confident answers, most of them somewhere between two and five years. The number is not wrong. It is just not useful, because it answers a question nobody is really asking.
What car owners in Dubai actually want to know is this: how long until my car stops behaving the way it did the week I collected it? That is a different question, and it has a different answer.
Here is the version we give customers at the counter, before they book anything.
A professionally applied coating on properly prepared paint will hold up for two to five years in Dubai. Entry-level products sit at the lower end. Multi-layer professional systems sit at the upper end. Consumer spray products bought online rarely make it past one summer here.
But almost every owner who tells us “my coating is finished” still has a working coating on the car. What they have lost is one specific property of it, usually the most visible one. Understanding which property goes first is the whole answer.
A coating is not a light bulb. It does not work perfectly and then stop. It degrades from the outside in, and the things it does for your car fail in a predictable order.
Think of it as three separate clocks, all started on the same day, all running at different speeds.
This is the beading. Water pulls into tight round drops, rolls off the panel, takes dust with it. It is also the property that dies first, because it lives in the outermost few microns of the coating, and those microns take every hit: sand, brush bristles, detergent, sunlight, mineral deposits.
In Dubai, expect the aggressive beading to soften somewhere between month six and month twelve on a car that lives outdoors. It does not vanish. It changes character. Water starts sheeting off in flat sheets rather than pearling.
Most people read that as failure. It is not.
The depth and the slippery feel last considerably longer than the beading, often twice as long. This surprises owners, because the two feel like they should be linked. They are not. Gloss comes from the flatness and clarity of the cured film. Slickness comes from low surface friction. Both survive a fair amount of wear that has already killed the hydrophobic top layer.
You can have a car that no longer beads dramatically but still looks and feels far better than an uncoated equivalent parked next to it.
This is the one that matters most and gets discussed least, because it is invisible. The cured silica layer sits between the sun and your clear coat and absorbs damage that would otherwise go into the paint. It is the reason the coating was worth paying for in the first place.
This clock runs the longest. On a decent professional application, real protective function continues well after the beading has become unremarkable, often into year three or four.
When someone says a coating “lasted two years”, ask them which clock they were watching. In our experience at Auto Gleam Car Care LLC, the honest breakdown for a Dubai daily driver looks roughly like this:

Those ranges assume a car that sees real Dubai use. Adjust them upward for a garage queen and downward for a car that sleeps in an open lot in Jebel Ali.
Every coating on earth degrades. What makes this city different is the rate, and it comes down to four forces that happen to arrive together.
Air temperature in July might read 45°C. That figure is almost irrelevant to your paint. A dark bonnet parked in open sun in Business Bay will sit at 70–80°C for hours at a stretch.
Then you get in, start the engine, and blast the air conditioning at 20°C. The panel contracts. That night it drops another twenty degrees. You have just put the coating through a thermal cycle, and you will do it again tomorrow, and roughly three hundred more times this year.
Coatings are engineered to survive that. They are not engineered to survive it indefinitely.
From April through October the UV index in Dubai regularly sits at 11 or 12, which is the top of the scale. Nine months of the year it stays at 8 or above.
This is exactly the load a coating is designed to absorb, and absorbing it is what wears it out. A coating protecting a car in a mild European climate is doing light duty. The same product on the same car here is working at full capacity, every day, for most of the year.
Shamal winds carry fine desert particles that behave like an extremely mild polishing compound whenever they move across a surface. You cannot feel it happening. Over a summer it thins the sacrificial top layer of the coating measurably, which is one reason beading fades before anything else does.
This is also why wiping dust off a dry panel with a cloth is so destructive here. You are not removing the dust. You are dragging it.
Desalinated water carries a heavy mineral load. Let it dry on a hot panel and the water evaporates while the calcium stays behind, bonded to the surface.
On uncoated paint those deposits etch into the clear coat. On a coated car they sit on the coating instead, which is the system working correctly. But if they are left there through repeated heat cycles, they will bond hard enough to require machine work to remove, and that machine work takes coating with it.
Building sprinkler systems and the runoff from tower window cleaning are worse than anything that falls from the sky. If your parking bay sits under either, you are getting a mineral bath several times a week and your coating is aging faster than your neighbour’s for reasons that have nothing to do with the product.
This is what owners actually report to us, in order.
Water behaves theatrically. Dust rinses off with a hose. The car looks better after a wash than it did new. Nothing here is surprising, and nothing here tells you anything about longevity yet.
Beading tightens up less dramatically than it did. Owners notice this first on the bonnet and roof, which is correct, because those panels take the most direct sun and the most dust. Vertical panels still look strong.
This is the point where most people start googling whether their coating has failed. It has not. The horizontal surfaces are simply ahead of the rest of the car.
Water sheets rather than beads. The car still washes easily and still looks noticeably better than uncoated cars of the same age. Gloss is largely intact. Protection is largely intact.
Nothing dramatic happens during this stretch, which is why it is the phase most articles skip. It is also the phase where a single maintenance visit adds the most life for the least money.
Now the differences between installations become obvious. A single-layer entry product on paint that was not properly decontaminated will be visibly tired. A multi-layer professional application on correctly prepped paint will still be doing its job, quietly, with beading that looks unremarkable and protection that is entirely intact.
Two identical cars, coated on the same day, can look a year apart by this point. That gap was created on day one, not in year two.
This is the single biggest variable and it is not close. A car in basement parking that sees sun only while driving can double the working life of its coating compared to an identical car in an open lot.
If you have covered parking available and you are not using it, no product on the market will compensate.
A coating bonds to whatever surface it is applied to. Apply it over bonded contamination, swirl marks and old sealant and it will bond to those things, and it will fail when they let go.
This is why proper machine polishing and paint correction before coating is not an upsell. It is the difference between a coating that lasts and one that flakes off in patches at eighteen months. A cheap coating on perfectly prepared paint routinely outlives an expensive coating rushed onto a dirty car.
Thickness matters, because the top layer is sacrificial and there is simply more of it to lose. Multi-layer systems last longer for exactly this reason, not because of marketing.
We have seen a two-year coating destroyed in eight months by weekly trips through an automatic brush wash, and a one-year coating still performing at fourteen months on a car that was hand washed properly.
Rotating brushes are the fastest way to wear out a coating in this city. They are also, unfortunately, the most convenient.
A maintenance treatment applied over an existing coating restores the sacrificial outer layer without redoing the entire job. Two of these over the life of a coating can add a genuine year of performance.
Most owners never do this, because nobody told them it existed.
A five-year warranty does not mean your coating will bead like new for five years. It means the installer will address specific listed failures during that period, and the list is usually shorter than people assume.
Read what is actually covered. Delamination and premature failure of the coating film, typically yes. Loss of hydrophobic performance, typically no, because that is considered normal wear rather than a defect.
There is nothing dishonest about this, but there is a gap between what an owner hears and what the document says, and that gap causes most of the arguments in this industry. Ask the question before you book, not after.
Three checks, none of which require equipment.
Rinse a clean panel with a low-pressure open hose and watch how the water leaves. Coating still working: water evacuates fast and leaves most of the panel dry. Coating finished: water spreads flat, clings, and covers the panel in a film that sits there.
Test the door, not the bonnet. Vertical panels give you a fairer reading of the car overall.
Wash the car, dry it, and run the back of your hand across the paint. Working coatings feel slick and continuous. A failed coating feels dry, and often slightly grabby.
How long does the car take to dry, and does it spot? A functioning coating sheds water fast enough that mineral spotting is minimal. When you start finding water marks on panels that never used to spot, the sacrificial layer is thinning.
A car carrying a layer of road film, old wax residue or bonded contamination will fail all three tests while the coating underneath is perfectly healthy. Before you conclude that your coating is dead, get the car properly decontaminated and test again. We see this constantly, and about half the time the coating is fine and the surface just needed cleaning.
None of this is complicated. It is just consistent.
Wash more often, not less. Contamination sitting on a hot panel is what ages a coating. A fortnightly wash in summer is not excessive here, it is maintenance.
Use a pH-neutral shampoo. Strong alkaline detergents strip the outer layer of the coating. If a shampoo cuts through grease instantly, it is doing the same thing to your protection.
Never wash or dry in direct sun. Water evaporating on a 70°C panel leaves every mineral it was carrying, bonded in place. Wash early morning, late evening, or under cover.
Deal with contamination the same day. Bird droppings and squashed insects are acidic, and Dubai heat accelerates them dramatically. A coating buys you hours, not weeks.
Never use a brush wash. This one is not negotiable if you want the coating to reach its rated life.
Have it inspected annually. A ten-minute check tells you which of the three clocks has run down and whether a top-up will restore performance or whether it is time to start again. Any competent car care workshop in Dubai will do this without charging you for the privilege.
Worth being straight about this, because the answer is not always the workshop.
Sometimes it is the product. Cheap coatings and unbranded chemicals underperform in this climate, full stop. What survives a European winter does not necessarily survive an Emirati August.
Often it is the preparation. A coating applied over inadequate decontamination, or in a dusty open bay, or without correct curing conditions, will fail regardless of what it cost. Application environment matters more than most customers realise, which is why the work should happen in a controlled indoor space rather than in a car park.
Sometimes it is the owner. Brush washes, harsh chemicals, washing at noon in July, six months between washes with sand sitting on the paint. We have all seen it, and the coating gets blamed for it.
Honest workshops will tell you which of the three it was. You can usually see the difference on the car — patchy failure points to preparation, uniform dulling points to age and wear, and heavy micro-scratching points to how the car has been washed. Our own completed work gives a reasonable sense of what correctly prepared paint looks like before a coating goes on.
Once a coating reaches the end of its useful life you have three routes.
A maintenance top-up works when the base coating is still intact and only the outer layer has worn. Fastest and least invasive option, and the right call more often than people think.
A full recoat is required when the coating has genuinely broken down or when the paint underneath has picked up defects that need correcting first. This is a fresh start, including the polishing stage.
Moving to film makes sense if your frustration was never really about gloss. Coatings do not stop stone chips. If your bonnet is peppered from highway driving, no coating will fix that, and paint protection film is the honest answer instead. Many owners here end up running film on the front-facing panels with coating over everything else, which is a sensible combination for these roads.
It significantly slows it. The coating absorbs UV that would otherwise reach your clear coat, which is the mechanism behind fading and oxidation. It is not a permanent shield, and it needs to still be intact to work, which is the argument for maintaining it rather than forgetting about it.
Yes, substantially. Covered parking is the highest-impact thing you can do, and it costs nothing if you already have the option.
Only if the old coating is sound. If it has broken down unevenly, the new layer bonds to a failing surface and inherits the problem. Any workshop worth using will inspect before committing.
It usually means the coating was buried under road film rather than worn out. Encouraging, and worth a proper decontamination wash before assuming the worst.
Leave it alone for the first week while the coating fully cures. Rain, sprinklers and dust during that window are the most common cause of avoidable early problems.
Indirectly, yes. Dark cars run hotter in the sun, so they cycle through wider temperature swings and show wear sooner. Black and dark blue cars in this city are simply harder work.
Two to five years is a reasonable expectation for professional work in Dubai. But the number depends far less on which product goes on your car than on three things: how well the paint was prepared before application, where the car spends its nights, and how it gets washed.
Anyone quoting you a lifespan without asking those questions first is guessing.
